What Is Thermage®?
A radiofrequency-based cosmetic treatment, Thermage® tightens, contours, and smooths the skin. The Thermage® device delivers RF energy into the deep, collagen-rich layers of the skin to tighten it and boost collagen production.
Our bodies produce less collagen as we age, allowing lines and wrinkles to etch into the skin. At the same time, existing collagen fibers stretch and become brittle, making skin less elastic and causing it to sag. The heat energy from the Thermage® device causes water molecules and fibrous collagen to separate, so they immediately contract, tightening your skin. The radiofrequency energy also promotes collagen production, revitalizing your skin and improving visible signs of aging.
Thermage® is used to address aging and sagging skin on the face (including around the eyes, mouth, and forehead) and on most areas of the body.
Am I a Candidate for Thermage®?
Thermage® is safe for all skin types and tones and effectively addresses mild to moderate signs of aging and loose skin on the face or body. Lax skin, wrinkles, and crepeiness around the face and neck can all be improved by Thermage® treatments. However, Thermage® is not suitable for patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have pacemakers or any other type of electrical implant.
You will come to your Thermage® session with a clean face, free of any skincare products. Once you are comfortable, a paper transfer with grid markings is placed on your face to ensure the treatment is uniform and to help further customize your treatment. The grid markings are easily washed off after the procedure.
The Thermage® handpiece is placed on the area targeted for treatment, where the device delivers controlled pulses of RF energy deep into the middle layers of your skin. At the same time, the device cools the surface of your skin, and the Thermage® patented Comfort Pulse Technology creates gentle vibrations, which make the treatment more comfortable.
Thermage® is performed in our office, and each session takes 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the size and number of areas you are treating.
What Is Recovery Like After Thermage®?
One significant advantage of Thermage® is that recovery requires zero downtime. You can return to your normal activities immediately after your treatment.
Dr. Patel will give you specific aftercare instructions; however, you should avoid hot baths or showers and only use a gentle cleanser on your face for 24-48 hours after your treatment. Skip chemical and physical exfoliants to let your skin recover for a few days. Additionally, staying out of the sun or wearing a good SPF is always recommended, especially for at least the first week after your Thermage® treatment.
You’ll see immediate skin tightening results after your Thermage® session, but your results will continue to develop and improve over the next six months as your body creates new collagen.
Thermage® results typically last for one to two years, though several factors (the aging process, skin care regimen, and overall skin health) will influence their longevity. To extend your results, we recommend the occasional maintenance treatment.

Thermage® FAQs
The beauty of Thermage® is that you will see visible, lasting results after just one treatment. And because the results of Thermage® last up to two years, it is entirely up to you if you decide to undergo periodic touch-ups to maintain your results.
To prepare for your Thermage® treatment, it is recommended that you avoid UV exposure for at least two weeks before your session. A week before your treatment, discontinue using skincare topicals like retinoids or chemical exfoliants. On the day of your treatment, please arrive at our office with freshly cleaned skin, clear of makeup, and any skincare products, including moisturizer.
Thermage® treatments are not painful, though patients with sensitive skin may find the heat from the targeted RF energy uncomfortable. However, the Thermage® device is equipped with a cryo-cooling system designed to keep the surface of your skin cool during your treatment. Additionally, taking over-the-counter pain relievers before your Thermage® session may help if you are concerned about discomfort.
