Your nose is a prime facial feature that plays a noticeable and essential role in your overall appearance. Because it is such a defining feature if for any reason you are frustrated with the shape or size of your nose, it can affect your confidence. Rhinoplasty surgery is designed to reshape and refine your nose, bringing it into balance with your other facial features and restoring your self-esteem.

With the central element of your face in harmony and enhancement with your other features, you can Look WOW, Feel WOW, and Be WOW!

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as cosmetic nose surgery or a “nose job,” is designed to improve the appearance and function of the nose. One of the top three most popular facial cosmetic surgeries, rhinoplasty can address the size and shape of the nose and also repair damage caused by injury or trauma.

What Are My Rhinoplasty Options?

There are two methods of rhinoplasty, and the surgical technique is chosen according to the type and degree of correction necessary.

Closed Rhinoplasty: Closed rhinoplasty uses incisions inside the nose, leaving no visible scarring. It is used in cases where minor or more subtle correction is needed.

Open Rhinoplasty: Open rhinoplasty uses a small exterior incision across the columella (the skin under your nose that separates your nostrils). This allows for more visibility and a greater degree of correction. A thin scar is left along the columella, but it is minor and will fade with time.

What Are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?

Because rhinoplasty can both improve the appearance of your nose and restore function, there are several benefits, including:

  • Reducing the size of the nose
  • Straightening a misshapen nose
  • Correcting a drooping nasal tip
  • Correcting a bulbous, hooked, or upturned nose
  • Smoothing out bumps on the nose
  • Repairing the nose after facial trauma
  • Changing the shape and size of the nostrils
  • Repairing a deviated septum
  • Improving breathing
  • Reducing snoring and chronic sinus issues

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Good candidates for rhinoplasty are nonsmoking adults whose noses have finished growing and who have realistic expectations for the procedure’s results. Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty include:

  • Wish to address the size or shape of their nose
  • Wish to improve their facial aesthetic
  • Want to bring their nose into balance and proportion with the rest of their face
  • Wish to repair defects, injuries, or trauma of the nose
  • Have breathing or sinus issues due to a deviated septum

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgery performed using general anesthesia. For a closed rhinoplasty, Dr. Patel makes small incisions inside your nose, separating the skin from the cartilage. He will then reshape your nose, reducing or adding cartilage and bone if necessary. The incisions are carefully closed once the nose has been altered to his satisfaction. An open rhinoplasty procedure is similar, except for the additional incision across the columella.

Once the surgery is complete, your nose will be packed with gauze, and a splint will be placed on your nose to protect and maintain its new shape.

What Can I Expect From My Rhinoplasty Recovery?

After rhinoplasty surgery, you will experience significant swelling and bruising, but these are typical side effects and will fade with time. You may feel mild to moderate discomfort, but this is temporary and easily managed with prescription or over-the-counter pain relievers.

You will need to take one to two weeks off of work to recover and sleep with your head elevated during this time to help minimize swelling. You must avoid blowing your nose and sneezing (if possible) to avoid disturbing the delicate healing inside your nose. You can resume light exercise about three weeks after your procedure but must refrain from strenuous exercise for about eight weeks or until Dr. Patel clears you.

When Will I See My Rhinoplasty Results?

Because you will have significant swelling after surgery, it may take a while to see your rhinoplasty results. By three to four months after your surgery, about 80-90% of the swelling will have dissipated, and you’ll be able to see your nose’s new shape. It can take up to a year for all swelling to go down, allowing you to see your full results.
