What Is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to improve the appearance of the eyelids. In severe cases of eyelid ptosis, this procedure can even improve peripheral vision. Whether you want this procedure for cosmetic or functional purposes, you can expect it to significantly enhance the area around your eyes.
Following your eyelid surgery, you can expect the following:
- Tighter, lifted upper eyelids
- Increased peripheral vision as there will no longer be sagging skin impairing this field
- Reduced bags and puffiness beneath the eyes
- Reduced wrinkles around the eyelids
- Eyes that WOW!
What Are My Eyelid Surgery Options?
Cosmetic surgery is customized to the patient’s needs; therefore, no two procedures look alike. You will be able to discuss the following techniques in greater detail during your consultation with Dr. Patel.
Upper eyelid surgery addresses concerns in the upper eyelids, including excessive eyelid hooding. This incision runs along the crease of the upper eyelid, so scars are naturally concealed.
Lower eyelid surgery addresses puffy bags and overall looseness beneath the eyes. Incisions are usually made within the inner part of the lower eyelid (transconjunctival) and heal well.
These techniques can be performed individually or together.
Am I A Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?
Having imperfections that can be improved with blepharoplasty does not automatically make you a good candidate for the procedure.
The ideal candidate for eyelid surgery should:
- Be healthy and free of conditions that may negatively affect recovery.
- Be a non-smoker.
- Not be taking blood-thinning medications or supplements.
- Have realistic expectations and accept that the results of the procedure will be unique to each patient.
During your consultation, Dr. Patel will assess you thoroughly and perform tests to determine if you are a good candidate. Once we have determined that blepharoplasty is the right procedure for you, you will receive specific preoperative instructions.
How Is Blepharoplasty Performed?
Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure.
While your eyelid surgery is customized to your needs, you can expect the following:
- You will meet with Dr. Patel preoperatively to review the details of your procedure.
- Anesthesia will be administered for your safety and comfort.
- Pre-marked incisions are made along the upper eyelid fold (upper blepharoplasty), inside the lower eyelid (lower blepharoplasty), or both.
- Loose skin is trimmed, fat pockets are removed or redistributed, and the eyelid muscles are tightened.
- Sutures and skin adhesives are used to close these incisions.
The surgery itself will take one to two hours.
What Is Blepharoplasty Recovery Like?
After the procedure, you will need a couple of weeks to recover. During the early days of recovery, you may experience some discomfort, but this is manageable with pain medication. Your eyelids will be swollen and bruised, but you can manage these issues with ice packs. Additionally, your vision may be blurry initially. This is expected and should not be a significant concern.
You will likely be ready to return to work after a couple of weeks. However, the appearance of your eyelid will continue to improve for up to three months.
What Results Can I Expect From Blepharoplasty?
Immediately after the procedure, your eyelids will look swollen and bruised. The results of the procedure will become more apparent as the swelling and bruising subsides.
Most patients experience significant improvement in the look of their eyelids following this procedure, which impacts the appearance of your entire face.
Eyelid surgery results are expected to last for many years. However, the procedure will not stop the natural process of aging.

Blepharoplasty FAQs
Your blepharoplasty cost varies depending on the extent of the procedure, the techniques used, and any surgical procedures being performed simultaneously. You will also have additional fees, such as anesthesia and facility fees. Financing options are available.
Blepharoplasty is performed under anesthesia for your comfort and safety. Our CRNA will administer general anesthesia or IV sedation, depending on your needs and the extent of your procedure. The team at WOW Cosmetic Surgery prioritizes patient comfort during and after your surgery and will take all measures necessary to help ensure a pain-free procedure and smooth recovery.
Eyelid surgery is performed to address the eye region. Many patients combine their eyelid surgery with a facelift, brow lift, fat transfer, and/or laser skin tightening to maintain facial balance.
While there are many non-surgical treatment options to improve the look of the upper face, including neurotoxins like BOTOX® Cosmetic (to smooth wrinkles) and dermal fillers (to restore volume to tear troughs), neither of these treatments remove excess skin or displaced fat or muscle tissue. However, these are wonderful combination treatments.
Focusing on a healthy lifestyle, including eating a nutrient-rich diet, getting regular exercise, protecting your eyes from the sun (with sunglasses and hats), getting plenty of sleep, and managing stress, is important to your blepharoplasty results.
