What Are My Breast Implant Options?

The top implant options both comprise a silicone shell, offering two filling choices. You can choose from a saline or silicone implant and select the size, shape, and profile that best fits your needs.

Saline implants are inflated with sterile saline post-placement in the breast pocket, delivering a firmer, rounder, and visibly augmented breast contour.

Silicone implants come prefilled with cohesive silicone gel, better mimicking natural breast tissue.

Type of Breast Augmentation

Next, you will need to decide if an implant is the type of augmentation you want to add to your breast lift. For women who only want moderate augmentation, you may choose fat-transfer breast augmentation. This method involves removing fat from a “problem” area on your body and injecting the fat cells into your breasts to add shape and volume.

Although fat grafting yields the most natural appearance and texture, it doesn’t offer the same degree of size augmentation nor predictability as implants. Consequently, numerous women opt for implants instead or decide on a combination approach, incorporating fat grafting alongside implants.

Breast Lift Incision Options

The type of incision used in your breast lift surgery depends on the amount of ptosis (sagging) in your breasts. Incision options include:

Donut Lift: Also known as a periareolar incision, a donut incision involves two concentric incisions around the outside of the areola to address minor sagging.

Lollipop Lift: A lollipop lift uses an incision around the areolas and one that extends down the center of your breast to the inframammary fold (where your breast meets your chest wall). It is designed to address moderate sagging.

Anchor Lift: An anchor lift, sometimes called an inverted T lift, uses the same incisions as a lollipop lift but adds a third incision horizontally along the inframammary fold. This incision type is used to address significant sagging.

Implant Placement

If you choose saline or silicone implants, you must decide if you want subglandular implant placement (under the breast tissue but above the pectoral muscle) or submuscular placement (under the pectoral muscle).

In your consultation, Dr. Patel will conduct a comprehensive assessment and examinations to ascertain your suitability for breast lift with augmentation surgery. For ideal candidacy, you should:

• Be healthy and free of any conditions that may negatively affect recovery
• Be at least 18 years old for saline implants and 22 years old for silicone implants
• Be a non-smoker
• Not be taking any blood-thinning medications or supplements
• Not be immune-compromised by any conditions or treatments
• Maintain realistic expectations and understand that the procedure’s outcome will vary slightly for each patient.

Breast lift with augmentation is performed using general anesthesia, yet still an outpatient procedure. Before your surgery, you will meet with Dr. Patel to review your surgery and go over the details of incisions, augmentation type, and placement.

Once anesthesia is administered, Dr. Patel will begin the breast lift portion of the surgery by placing incisions in pre-marked locations. He will create a pocket for the implant and carefully place the implant into the pocket. He will then lift and sculpt the internal breast tissue as required. Dr. Patel then trims away excess skin and adjusts the size and placement of the nipple areolar complex as necessary. He completes the surgery by carefully closing the incisions with sutures.

After your surgery, Dr. Patel will apply sterile dressing around your breasts to protect your incisions. You will wear a surgical or compression bra as you heal to help support your breasts and minimize swelling.

Though it can be easily managed with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication, you will experience some initial discomfort after surgery. Swelling and bruising are also expected side effects that will gradually diminish.

Take the time to rest and heal. You should take one week off work and limit your activity during this period. You will gradually be able to resume exercising about one month after surgery; however, strenuous workouts and lifting with exertion should be avoided for four to six weeks or until Dr. Patel clears you.

Immediately after surgery, you will see the initial results from your breast lift with augmentation. These will continue to improve as you heal. Your final results will be visible a couple of months after your procedure as swelling subsides and your implants settle into place.  The incisional scars will continue to improve up to one year.
