What Is a Breast Lift?
Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift is a cosmetic procedure that addresses sagging (ptosis) by lifting and reshaping the breasts. It involves tightening your breast tissue to improve the projection and symmetry of your breasts while removing stretched or weak skin.
While breast lift surgery can be performed alone, it is commonly combined with breast augmentation (to increase breast size) or breast reduction (to reduce breast size).
Following your breast lift, you can expect the following:
- Elevated, perkier breasts
- Better breast projection
- Shapely, more symmetrical breasts
- Centrally positioned and better-sized areolas
- Lifted breasts that WOW
What Are My Breast Lift Options?
The incision technique used for your specific case will depend on your breast anatomy, degree of sagging, and size and position of your areola.
The periareolar incision, more commonly referred to as a donut lift, is used to address minor sagging (Grade I). Grade I ptosis describes breasts that sag slightly below the inframammary fold (breast crease). Here, two concentric incisions are made around the areola to slightly tighten tissues and remove the skin between the two incisions.
A lollipop lift is appropriate for women with moderate breast ptosis (Grade II). When your nipple-areola complex (NAC) falls below the inframammary fold but is still above your lower breast tissue, you may experience Grade II sagging. Here, the incision runs around the areola and vertically down the lower pole of the breast — from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease.
The anchor lift, or an inverted-T incision, is appropriate for women with significant breast ptosis (Grade III). Women with Grade III ptosis experience significant sagging where the nipple position is much lower than the crease and lower breast tissue. Here, an incision is made around the areola, vertically down the lower pole of the breast, and across the inframammary fold.
Am I a Candidate for Breast Lift?
While breast lift surgery is the most versatile breast enhancement procedure, not every woman qualifies for it. The ideal candidate should:
- Be healthy and free of conditions that may negatively affect recovery.
- Be a non-smoker.
- Not be taking blood-thinning medications or supplements.
- Have realistic expectations and accept that the results of the procedure will be unique.
If future pregnancies are part of your plans, it’s best to wait before undergoing a breast lift. Pregnancy can alter the breasts, negating the results of your surgery.
During your consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will carefully review your medical history and evaluate your aesthetic concerns to help determine if a breast lift is the best option.
How Is Breast Lift Performed?
Breast lift is performed on an outpatient basis, and you can return home shortly after your surgery.
While breast lift surgery is customized to you, you can anticipate the following:
- You will meet with Dr. Patel preoperatively to review the details of your procedure.
- Anesthesia will be administered for your safety and comfort.
- Pre-marked incisions are made that follow the necessary pattern based on the selected lift technique.
- The internal breast tissues are lifted and secured in an elevated position. When a breast reduction is combined with your lift, fat and glandular tissue are also removed.
- Stretched, weak skin is trimmed along the incision’s edges.
- The nipple-areola complex (NAC) is resized, if needed, and raised to a more central area of the breast.
- Sutures and skin adhesives are used to close the incisions.
- Dressings are placed around the breasts to protect the incisions and aid healing.
In some cases, mastopexy (breast lift) can be combined with breast augmentation to improve size, contour, and firmness.
What Is Breast Lift Recovery Like?
Following your surgery, it’s normal to experience bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort. These symptoms are temporary and should gradually diminish over time. Discomfort is well-managed with oral pain medications.
Rest and limited activity are encouraged during the first few days after surgery. Most patients resume light duties within a week of their breast lift. Patients must restrain from heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for four to six weeks or until otherwise instructed.
By carefully following the post-operative instructions and attending all scheduled follow-up visits, you can help reduce the risk of complications.
What Results Can I Expect From My Breast Lift Surgery?
As healing progresses, the breasts will settle into their new position for a perkier, firmer, and more youthful-looking bustline. Patients often indicate feeling happier and more feminine with their breast contours. Over time and with attentive care, swelling and incision scars will become less noticeable, and you’ll enjoy your beautiful results for years to come.

Breast Lift FAQs
The cost of your breast lift varies depending on the extent of the procedures, the techniques used, and whether breast augmentation or breast reduction is being performed simultaneously.
You will also have additional fees, such as anesthesia and facility fees. WOW Cosmetic Surgery offers financing to help make your dream procedure a reality.
Breast lift surgery is most commonly performed using general anesthesia. The WOW Cosmetic Surgery team prioritizes patient comfort during and after your surgery and will take all necessary measures to minimize pain and ensure a smooth recovery.
While a breast lift won’t significantly alter your breast size, it effectively reshapes the breasts to achieve a perkier, less saggy appearance.
For women with oversized, cumbersome breasts, excess fat and tissue can be removed during your breast lift to create a breast reduction with a lift combination. This surgery is ideal for women experiencing physical discomfort and emotional insecurities due to the large size of their breasts.
Breast lift surgery elevates the breasts and restores a more compact form. It does not increase volume. Breast augmentation with lift, or breast augmentation mastopexy, combines a lift with implants to give you the best of both worlds.
Breast lift surgery provides long-lasting results; however, these results are not permanent because this procedure cannot stop the natural aging process. Several factors can contribute to sagging breasts, including future weight fluctuations and pregnancies. Following breast lift surgery, it is best to maintain a stable weight and always wear a supportive bra.
Most women choose to postpone their breast lift until they have finished having children, so this is often not an issue. If you choose to have a breast lift or a breast reduction and lift before having children, there may be some complications with breastfeeding. While some women have experienced no problems, the placement of the incisions and the techniques used can damage or sever the connecting milk ducts, making breastfeeding challenging. If this is a concern of yours, please discuss this with Dr. Patel during your consultation.
