What Is VI Peel®?
VI Peel® is a medium-depth chemical peel that exfoliates the skin and promotes the production of new collagen and proteins. It can penetrate the epidermis and reach the dermis underneath to treat signs of aging, correct skin pigmentation problems, and improve skin texture.
VI Peel® offers a variety of peels to treat various skin concerns, and each peel contains specific ingredients to address those concerns. Some ingredients commonly found in VI Peel® products include:
- Trichloroacetic acid: Also called TCA, trichloroacetic acid is an anti-aging aid that helps smooth skin, soften fine lines and wrinkles, clear pores and acne, and address uneven skin tone caused by melasma or hyperpigmentation.
- Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid fights acne, exfoliates the skin to help keep pores unclogged, and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. It also helps hydrate skin and can reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and acne scars.
- Vitamin C: Also known as ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is a skincare powerhouse that stimulates collagen and reduces hyperpigmentation.
Other VI Peel® ingredients include retinoic acid, phenol, benzoyl peroxide, hydrocortisone, and hydroquinone.
- Exfoliates dry, damaged skin
- Stimulates collagen production
- Reduces pore size and promotes oil control
- Reduces active acne
- Minimizes acne scarring
- Addresses fine lines and wrinkles
- Treats sun-damaged skin
Am I a Candidate for VI Peel®?
VI Peel® is a safe and effective treatment appropriate for all skin types. Ideal candidates for VI Peel® wish to reduce mild to moderate signs of aging and other skin concerns, including sun damage, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, and uneven tone and texture.
Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have active skin infections should not receive a VI Peel®. Additionally, those with darker skin may experience hypopigmentation, so it is essential that you discuss the pros and cons of the treatment with a trained and experienced provider before receiving the peel.
Prior to your VI Peel® treatment, we will review your health and medical history to ensure that it is the right choice for you.
How Is VI Peel® Performed?
When you come in for a VI Peel®, your face is cleansed, and your VI Peel® is applied in two layers. You may initially feel a warm or tingling sensation, but this is expected and will diminish as the numbing agent in the mask absorbs. Once the application of your VI Peel® is complete, you are free to leave the office.
You must leave the VI Peel® on your face for four to six hours; during this time, you cannot get your face wet or apply any skincare products. Your skin may appear pink or slightly red, but this is normal. Once the peel has been on your skin for the required time, you can rinse it off using a gentle cleanser.
What Is VI Peel® Recovery Like?
Immediately after your VI Peel® treatment, you should be able to go about your daily routine. However, you will need to avoid direct sunlight and any type of exercise until after the peel is removed.
Your skin may appear red and slightly swollen for the first 24 hours or so after your VI Peel®. You should also avoid sweating for the first 48 hours, as it can affect your results.
By the third day, your skin will start peeling and continue to peel up to seven days after the treatment. During this time, it is essential to:
- Wear sunscreen
- Moisturize your peeling skin
- Refrain from touching or itching your face to avoid bacteria and scarring
- Do not pick at the peeling skin—let it slough off naturally during gentle cleansing or trim with clean cuticle scissors
You will receive detailed instructions for caring for your post-peel skin as it heals, and it is vital that you follow them closely to ensure the best possible results.
What Can I Expect From My VI Peel® Results?
Once your skin has peeled completely, you will be able to see the initial results of your VI Peel®. Your skin will continue to improve over the next three to four months as collagen is rebuilt and your skin cells regenerate.
While some patients are happy with their results after one peel, you may need up to six peels to see optimal results. Dr. Patel will create a treatment plan that includes the number of recommended peels according to your skin concerns and desired results.

VI Peel® FAQs
You should avoid UV exposure (including tanning beds) for a week to ten days before your procedure, as it increases skin sensitivity. You should also discontinue the use of topical skincare products containing retinoids and chemical exfoliants at least one week before your treatment and avoid shaving or dermaplaning during this time. If you take any medications for acne, be sure to let Dr. Patel know, as they can also make your skin more sensitive.
